A Major and four soldiers were killed today as result of Pakistan open firing on the Line of Control, in violation of the ceasefire, at Rajouri in the Pir Panchal Valley.
Shahid Choudhary, Deputy Commissioner, Rajouri, stated that around quarter past noon, there was firing from across the Line of Control on an Army patrol in the Keri Battalion area.
“The Army faced four fatalities, including a Major and three jawans,” — .Shahid Choudhary said
The Indian soldiers retaliated “strongly and effectively” noted the defence spokesman.
The Hindu reports, “the deceased belonged to the 2 Sikh regiment and were posted in the Chingus area of Rajouri. They have been identified as Major Moharkar Prafulla Ambadas, 32; Sepoy Pargat Singh, 30; Sepoy Gurmeet Singh; and Lance Naik Gurmail Singh, 34.”
It must be noted that this isn’t the first instance. In fact this is the second violation of cease fire in the LoC region in Rajouri. “Houses were damaged in [Pakistani] firing in Rajouri on Friday. People are living on the edge here,” said defence spokesman.
Tributes were paid to the deceased by Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti and Deputy Chief Minister Nirmal Singh.
“The sacrifices rendered by the martyrs would be remembered forever,” — Mr. Nirmal Singh.
This could be in retaliation to the Pakistani intruder who was shot while attempting to cross border and enter India. The 70th Battalion of the BSF shot the intruder, he is believed to be around 65. Reports stated that he was warned before being shot. It was only when he ignored the warnings of the personnel and kept proceeding, the BSF had to shoot the man. The incident happened on Friday around 10.30 p.m.
The body was kept in the mortuary for the post-mortem examination, and further investigations were under way.
